On Saturday, January 13th 2018, members of the First 5 Service Corps and PATH AmeriCorps Programs participated in a motivating and engaging event in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Our members were privileged to serve alongside other AmeriCorps members from the Youth Action Project by making over 500 lunches and care packages, consisting of hygiene products and essentials, for homeless residents surrounding the YMCA in San Bernardino, CA. All members also witnessed a special presentation open to all people within the community that discussed the teachings of Dr. King and how they remain relevant to this present day. The powerful lectures presented boldly by Dr. Wil Greer, Pastor LaQuetta Bush-Simmons, and Professor Monica Stockhausen, combined to present a call to action for the community to continue the unfinished work of Dr. King and for all people to acknowledge the importance of his life work. To close the empowering event for the day, a basketball tournament was hosted for the youth that attended.
